* The black mamba is the fastest snake in the world, reaching speeds of 23km/h over short distances.

* The black mamba can digest an animal the size of a large rat within nine hours.

* Snakes such as the black mamba are dark-skinned to enable their bodies to absorb a lot of radiant heat. Desert dwelling snakes are often paler to reflect heat, preventing overheating.

* The venom of both the black and green mamba is 'milked' from the fangs and used in medical research.

 

The black mamba is in fact a grey-brown colour. Its relative the green mamba is shorter and less aggressive but can still administer a fatal bite.
